Insinuations, Malice and Useless Speculations…
An update about Ted Failon’s wife:
Trinidad Etong passed away this Thursday evening, 8:50 pm at the New Era General Hospital. My outmost condolences to Ted Failon and the rest of the family.
—————————————————————————————————————————————————–
Yesterday, we have heard or watched in the news about the tragedy that struck Ted Failon’s family. Trinidad Etong was found with a gunshot wound in the temple and was rushed immediately to the hospital. I wont further the details of the case since it is being investigated by the authorities and yes, we should be contented muna with the official reports / statements coming from the authorities and the family itself. Why? Kasi ayaw kong mag-insinuate, create malice and usher useless speculations.
Investigations are all ongoing. Authorities are doing whatever they can. Let give this issue some time to settle, as also mentioned by Marocharim in his blog and yes, benefit of doubt for all the people involved. This is a complex and layered case – we all dont know what happened there or what – so I think it will be proper not to create theories ek-ek para lang may mapagusapan tayo about this topic. Let us give Ted and his family as well as the househelp a break and a time to grieve.
On the other hand, I made my usual hopping in the blogosphere and found this article from Filipino Voices. And yes, it makes a lame attempt to make breaking news ek-ek but actually fueling speculations and malice.
The article is carelessly written and is insensitive with the ongoings of the case. Here is a snippet of his article from FV:
Bong Osorio, ABS-CBN head for Corporate Communications called for understanding and avoid speculations as to the cause of the incident. Some malicious tongues say that Ted’s wife allegedly committed suicide, which is, to say the least, a very malicious insinuation.
Ted is still distraught as to what happened to his young wife, which I believe, is a few years younger than Ted. His wife has been with him since he first started his career as a young broadcaster over at ABS-CBN 2. I was fortunate to meet her with Ted when I was doing my OJT over at DZMM Channel 2.
Right now, the wife of Ted Failon is clinically dead, according to sources in the hospital. She reportedly sustained a gunshot wound in the temple. Sketchy reports say she shot herself early afternoon.
My dear readers, let’s pray for her safe recovery. Let’s refrain from all speculations. Let’s respect the privacy of Mr. Ted Failon especially in this time when their family is undergoing a very serious situation.
Seriously, I find this post irritating and yes, INSINUATING. Why?
Here are my points:
- Declaring that the wife of Ted Failon is CLINICALLY DEAD while as of the time of that post was aired, it is not. The wife of Ted Failon is still admitted in the hospital that time and IS FIGHTING FOR HER DEAR LIFE.
- Saying the readers should refrain from making malice, insinuations and speculations while THE ARTICLE ITSELF IS INSINUATING, MALICIOUS AND BREEDING USELESS SPECULATIONS.
Sounds contradictory? Hell yeah! and damn full of it. An article made by an insensitive blogger who does not pay respects to the affected family. Insensitive in a way that it does not know the sensitivity of the case. The author feels like he is the press bureau or spokesperson or something. Feeling lang.
One question though:
What if that blogger is in the shoes of Ted Failon and somewhat makes this crap – telling the whole blogosphere that his wife is CLINICALLY DEAD? How does it feel? Di ba nakakainsulto? Di ba nakakayamot?
Kasi naman, parang pinatay mo na din yung tao sa article while in fact, at the time of posting e hindi pa. It is just the same as wishing the person is dead. STUPID.
And then tuning in to his blog site, he makes theoritizations ek-ek blah blah in his posts – drawing parallels from the O.J. Simpson case. Here is a snippet of his article about this:
Clearly, these are all INITIAL REPORTS and I wrote them here just to update our readers on this case. The police is investigating this incident, which has shades of that O.J. Simpson murder case some years ago.
Will Failon be our next version of O.J. Simpson? Remember that some years ago, former Ilocos Congressman Farinas was, himself, accused and speculated to have murdered his wife Maria Theresa Carlson. Farinas was later cleared after reports say Carlson committed suicide by jumping from the open window of their condominium unit.
We need to reserve judgement on this one and avoid speculations since the authorities are doing their jobs to get to the bottom of this very controversial incident.
O wag daw maginsinuate peeps but guess what, he’s comparing the case to O.J. Simpson. Ano yun? Condemning Ted Failon as the suspect? Ano ba yan. I thought this guy is reminding his readers not to pass judgments but heck, he’s the one doing it. Contradictions, contradictions.
Its like saying na porno ang pinapanuod mo pero wag kang bastos. Konek mga peeps? Konek nyo nga. Even the post itself is wrong in some details like the type of gun used. He states:
4. The .38 caliber pistol found to have been used by the wife in the alleged suicide was found on her right side though the entry wound was on the left temple and exited to the right.
The gun is not a caliber .38 pistol but a Walter PPK handgun. Wrong in details, full of contradictions, and insinuating bad stuff. Shucks.
I dont know what’s wrong with this guy. I dont know if he knows what topics that can be blogged or not. And I dont know if he knows the supposedly logical flow of an article, how it will be written free from insinuations, malice and useless speculations. Parang pinangungunahan nya pa ang authorities and the other media guys. Feeling news bureau ba? I dont think so. He looks like an insinuator to me. Parang tinalo pa ang mga tsimoso at tsismosa sa palengke.
I hope this guy would try to assess first what he is writing instead of theorizing ek-ek and making feeling intellectual ek-ek. And sana, malaman nya kung ano ang dapat iblog at hindi na muna.
Tsk. This guy needs an editor. Care to apply for that guy?
Did I spoiled your day again peeps? Haha. Spoil ko na lang ulet tomorrow. Haha.

hi! i posted this on you FV comment, but i paste it here coz i’m curious about ur opinion:
”
but silver, i don’t get your complaint:
why is it wrong to tell people about an event and subsequently editorialize that we ought not to speculate wildly?
in real life, don’t we do this: we tell people about what happens, but tell them to keep comments civil?
so what does this “suggestion” tell us what we ought not to do: i.e. do not launch into conspiracy theories about who killed who, etc…
what does this suggestion tell us what we could do: makiramay, etc…
isn’t this the OBVIOUS reading?
second, initial reports may be wrong with specific details. the idea is to tell people about corrections regarding facts. thats always a good idea, and it helps us get a more accurate picture of what happened.
so, some people have been correcting pat’s facts. thanks for that.”

Havent you notice Pat’s writing??
Title says serious condition but states CLINICALLY DEAD in the article.
Well, at that time, the hospital issued a press release that the patient is still FIGHTING FOR HER LIFE.
Another thing, the article is telling that readers should refrain from speculating but the author is actually fueling speculations.
Get the difference Gabby?
It does not necessarily mean makiramay but rather be sensitive about the issue. Pat’s article is full of contradictions and just creating background noise. Not helping the case but making it murkier than a fishpond.

thanks! so…
1)
it would have been OK if he had not said clinically dead? (which is a wrong fact).
so wrong facts make for ‘background noise’?
if so, won’t all initial blogger reports have some fact that is wrong?
therefore, all bloggers shouldn’t be the first to report stuff (to forestall being factually wrong)? leave that to newspapers and the like?
also, he said he cited ’sources’. Now, sources may OR may not be wrong.
should we avoid using sources?
you see, i’m trying to understand what exactly makes what makes what he wrote wrong. so if we remove the wrong facts, would it have been OK?
2) lets assume all the facts are true. clearly the event is special coz someone died.
just mentioning someone died brings out the question: paano sya namatay?
what i’m saying is that events like these invites speculation.
when we share this type of iinfo with friends/family, don’t we also add the suggestion, “please dont speculate” all we know are these facts now, so please don’t make up stories about who killed who, etc…
isn’t this what we always do in real life? isn’t this what we should expect from people?
lets imagine na ako ay namatayan, and the death is not natural and many facts are cloudy.
in this case, shouldn’t i say “here are the facts i know now, and please lets wait to see if these facts turn out to be true”
thanks. i’m trying to understand this issue.

Gabby,
Simple lang yan. Read Pat’s article again as well as your fellow FV readers such as Benigno. Follow the thread.
If that is your opinion, that is fine with me. I wont push my opinion down in your throat.

“I dont know if you spotted the article saying let’s refrain from speculating …”
yeah, nabasa ko yun.
so now i’m wondering, how can one write an article that tells people about a ghastly thing as a suicide, without being insensitive.
is this even possible?
if not, should anyone even try?
it seems to me, that the problematic part of it is the “fueling speculations” part.
if so, how can an article about something like suicide NOT fuel speculation. is there a way to write about suicide that doesnt give the appearance of insensitivity?
thanks. i realize that this is a hard problem, but it must be confronted. we still ought to be able to talk about suicide and murder. sana lang, its sensitive. how do we do that?
so, i’m sorta moving beyond pat mangubat’s article, or using it as a spring board to this larger discussion…
looking at newspaper articles, they too lay out facts that appear like speculation, taken from ’sources’. “body was found at this time”, “found in this condition” etc… but they are not viewed as fueling speculation, EVEN IF the facts later on happen to be wrong. (rarely happens, but could happen)…
thanks! i’m curious about your opinion about this. its striking how different people can read the same document and have different conclusions. bakit? di ba interesting?

I dont know if you spotted the article saying let’s refrain from speculating while the article itself is fueling speculations. Yan ang napansin ko.
Kung iba naman ang nakikita mo, well and then, that’s your opinion.

You have a good point. And yes, I can see that you are an inquisitive person Gabby. I like that attitude. Keep going on with that inquisitive attitude – sky’s the limit when it comes to discovering knowledge about things and how they are.
It is possible to talk about suicide and murder (yes, they are difficult topics talaga. they are hard to write). How? When writing things like that, neutral words should be used which can make the article look tamer. And another thing, if the case is under investigation pa, it would be better to stop on the news details lang muna. It will be much better if after the results have been out – that’s the time for the proper discourse.
Example: The article should have mentioned that the wife is still in critical condition (given the time frame it was posted) and should have stopped there.
The author should not give any further details pa, given na the author himself is asking for readers not speculate.
At saka, may problem ang mga pulis dito sa atin. Dakdak sila ng dakdak ng kung anong hoolah balah sa case, samantalang di pa tapos ang investigation. You know, its like the fishpond analogy – they are making it murkier. Parang sa analogy na nanunuod tayo ng sine, pinapanuod natin ang movie para maintindihan natin tapos bigla ka na lang may maririnig na tili o sigaw from the other people. Di ba, nakakadistract at nakakairita. Too much background noise.
Ako din e moving on na with the article. Kung magblog man ako about the case, I’ll be doing it pag tapos na ang investigation. Mas masarap ang diskurso by that time kasi may mga resulta na.

“its striking how different people can read the same document and have different conclusions. bakit? di ba interesting?”
That is why, there are differences among people – given that there are differences in backgrounds – malaki ang effect nun sa opinion-forming ng isang tao. Kaya nga, I am not in the habit to contend with anyone or push my opinion down in other people’s throats kasi they might be coming from a different angle. Except nga lang pag heckler at pasaway, malamang e awayin ko pa. Haha.
Interesting ang Ted Failon case. Pero I opted not to blog about it muna. Maybe, I’ll be blogging it after the investigation na. Di ba, mas masarap ang huntahan pag may resulta na ang imbestigasyon? At saka nakita mo na kung paano ang ginawang proseso ng mga pulis, kaya by that time, pwede nang mag-diskurso about this.
