That is why, there are differences among people – given that there are differences in backgrounds – malaki ang effect nun sa opinion-forming ng isang tao. Kaya nga, I am not in the habit to contend with anyone or push my opinion down in other people’s throats kasi they might be coming from a different angle. It is possible to talk about suicide and murder (yes, they are difficult topics talaga. they are hard to write). How? When writing things like that, neutral words should be used which can make the article look tamer. And another thing, if the case is under investigation pa, it would be better to stop on the news details lang muna. It will be much better if after the results have been out – that’s the time for the proper discourse.

Example: The article should have mentioned that the wife is still in critical condition (given the time frame it was posted) and should have stopped there.

The author should not give any further details pa, given na the author himself is asking for readers not speculate.

At saka, may problem ang mga pulis dito sa atin. Dakdak sila ng dakdak ng kung anong hoolah balah sa case, samantalang di pa tapos ang investigation. You know, its like the fishpond analogy – they are making it murkier. Parang sa analogy na nanunuod tayo ng sine, pinapanuod natin ang movie para maintindihan natin tapos bigla ka na lang may maririnig na tili o sigaw from the other people. Di ba, nakakadistract at nakakairita. Too much background noise.

Ako din e moving on na with the article. Kung magblog man ako about the case, I’ll be doing it pag tapos na ang investigation. Mas masarap ang diskurso by that time kasi may mga resulta na.

so now i’m wondering, how can one write an article that tells people about a ghastly thing as a suicide, without being insensitive.

is this even possible?

if not, should anyone even try?

it seems to me, that the problematic part of it is the “fueling speculations” part.

if so, how can an article about something like suicide NOT fuel speculation. is there a way to write about suicide that doesnt give the appearance of insensitivity?

thanks. i realize that this is a hard problem, but it must be confronted. we still ought to be able to talk about suicide and murder. sana lang, its sensitive. how do we do that?

so, i’m sorta moving beyond pat mangubat’s article, or using it as a spring board to this larger discussion…

looking at newspaper articles, they too lay out facts that appear like speculation, taken from ’sources’. “body was found at this time”, “found in this condition” etc… but they are not viewed as fueling speculation, EVEN IF the facts later on happen to be wrong. (rarely happens, but could happen)…

so wrong facts make for ‘background noise’?

if so, won’t all initial blogger reports have some fact that is wrong?

therefore, all bloggers shouldn’t be the first to report stuff (to forestall being factually wrong)? leave that to newspapers and the like?

also, he said he cited ’sources’. Now, sources may OR may not be wrong.

should we avoid using sources?

you see, i’m trying to understand what exactly makes what makes what he wrote wrong. so if we remove the wrong facts, would it have been OK?

2) lets assume all the facts are true. clearly the event is special coz someone died.

just mentioning someone died brings out the question: paano sya namatay?

what i’m saying is that events like these invites speculation.

when we share this type of iinfo with friends/family, don’t we also add the suggestion, “please dont speculate” all we know are these facts now, so please don’t make up stories about who killed who, etc…

isn’t this what we always do in real life? isn’t this what we should expect from people?

lets imagine na ako ay namatayan, and the death is not natural and many facts are cloudy.

in this case, shouldn’t i say “here are the facts i know now, and please lets wait to see if these facts turn out to be true”
