Generation LOL
ROFL. LOL. GTG. BRB. CTC. LMAO. IMHO.
WTF.
And even STFU.
These abbreviations crept into our dictionaries all of a sudden.
If there are Generations X, Y and Z; there’s also what I can call as Generation LOL.
The advent of Internet, seamless social networking and chatting has paved way for changes in our language and the way we interact with other people. During the first decade of 2000s, the trend was gay lingo: chuva, chorva, witz, gibsung, sightsung, chorvalais etc. Even guys are up to speaking gay lingo at a times. The elderly got sneezes of it. What used to be jargons to gays, it evolved to the everyday colloquial terms.
And here comes the LOLcats, the LOLguys and the uLOLs in the internet. Nowadays, people seemed to be contented in communicating in the limits of 140 characters. The shorter the abbreviation, the wicked it will be or according to the teens nowadays: its so kewl.

So how does generation LOL affect the daily trends in our society?
It could be a number of reasons though – most likely the language and interaction between different members of the society. Linguists and classical (aherm, hardcore) English users frown at this idea: How can you communicate in the span of 140 characters? How can you say something as if tweeting or shouting out at Facebook? Occasional, grammar Nazis proliferate our humble Barrio Siete, correcting the bastardized (aherm…raped) english commonly used in the site itself.
The LOL language is even blamed for the deterioration of the language skills of the students today (I even loathed students saying: “Ma’am, may klase po ba tayo tom?”). But I think, the LOL language has little effect on that – I can say that the lack of motivation in forming reading and writing skills in the youth today is the cause of the deterioration.
Pray tell me, a lot of students out there cant compose a simple sentence, let alone an essay about simple topics. In short (and Filipino) katamaran na ng ibang estudyante ang dahilan kung bakit hirap na hirap sila sa language subjects nila. I dont think the incompetency of the teacher should receive the total blame since education is a two-way, dynamic process. Its not about teachers and students alone but education involves parents as well.
Tendency din kasi ang ibang magulang ngayon eh i-rely sa teachers ang lahat. What if the teachers put out all their efforts in teaching the kids while on the other hand, the parents are lax in doing follow-ups when the kids are at home?
I hope the generation LOL will not end up laughing ala-Joker nowadays.
What do you think will be the other effects of the changes introduced by the Generation LOL nowadays? Shoot your comments down below.
